Take combined accountability for effective database management, ensuring that support arrangements are in place to support production systems using the databases and resolving in-service problems that arise. At the higher level of the role the DBA will start to move towards sole accountability of a number of systems.
Manage databases through technical changes, such as database software and applications,
Devise, recommend and implement strategies for optimizing data management (performing optimally, monitoring performance and tuning them), backup and computer resources, with due regard to the constraints of the network, systems availability requirements and assurance of database integrity. Carry out and report on a post-implementation review of new systems from an optimal performance perspective.
Advise the Force on issues of systems and database security, validating all operational procedures to ensure security, including liaison with other Force staff leads to effective management and administration of user and data access permissions so security is never breached by unauthorized use of systems. At the lower level of the role this, much of this will be supported by other DBA's.
Ensure issues relating to database security are incorporated into all new systems developments.
Act as advisor to the Force on appropriate hardware specifications and configurations. At the lower level of the role this, much of this will be supported by other DBA's.
Assist the Force in defining an appropriate disaster recovery policy and an associated contingency implementation plan, ensuring critical data is not placed at risk due to major systems failure. At the lower level of the role this, much of this will be supported by other DBA's.
