Master of Malt is a multi-award-winning online spirits retailer, recently named Global Online Retailer of the Year for the sixth time in seven years at Whisky Magazine's Icons of Whisky 2018. Re-booted in 2009, we're known not only for our vast range of single malt Scotch whiskies, fine spirits and more, but also for our market-leading focus on innovation and customer experience.
The culture here is one of hard work but also great fun. We like to think of our business as a creative, driven, fast-paced, informal place to work. We have a certain way of communicating, which is very definitely a conscious part of our brand. We're not afraid to take some risks, and we're not afraid to indulge our silly side.
We are considering a major reachitecting of our web front end, and while we currently use WebForms, the next technology choice is up for discussion. The right candidate will be excited about the opportunity to lobby for which technologies they think will best suit the long term of our website.
You'll be getting to work with a focussed and growing team of first class engineers and leaders, ranging from some who have developed from new college graduates to be Senior Software Engineers, to experienced professionals hired from the likes of Netflix.
You love to learn, but be smart enough to know that the latest "cool" technology might not be the right long term choice.
You will love working in a team, enjoy pair programming, and developing junior team members.
You are confident enough to speak up when you see things being done wrong.
You understand that if a system doesn't work for the user when they need it, then it doesn't work. Successful systems have monitoring, redundancy and come with proper training and guides. You never blame the user.
Great software is right at the heart of our company - without the best technology we can't do great work, and coupling that technology with incredibly passionate and able people is how we win.
The work is challenging, interesting and important. You'll join a passionate and dedicated team working hard to build something they love.
The successful candidate will:
Be experienced with one of the many front end frameworks (Node.js, Vue.js, React, WebForms etc.)
You will have experience with eCommerce systems and with building internal tools. While the primary focus of this role will be a public facing website, our internal tools all have UI requirements too
You'll understand the need for performant code; page load times are critical
You believe in iterative test-driven development
You are an effective communicator, as happy dealing with internal customers face to face as you are with dealing with other engineers over Slack
You'll be good at taking fuzzy requirements and working with product teams to turn that into a detailed specification that will end up with a system that delights the end user
You will be able to demonstrate a track record of delivering world class web front ends
It would be great if you:
Have experience working on SEO strategies
Have experience with UI development for Apps (experience with XCode or Android Studio will be a big plus)
