It’s now harder than ever for new graduates to land the job of their dreams. In a competitive jobs market, with a shrinking public sector and the hangover from a recession still in effect, graduates must up their game in order to do the work they are probably worthy of. One of the best ways to do this is by taking an unpaid position as an intern with a company that you would like to work for.
If you are successful in gaining an internship, you should look at it as a unique opportunity to impress a potential future employer. Generally, they look for candidates who display professionalism and an ability to fit in with the specific corporate culture - and, it goes without saying, you need the requisite skills for the job.
But making a good impression can be harder than you think. Ensure you go into an internship with the right attitude or you will have worked for a few weeks or even months, literally, for nothing.
The number one piece of advice is: forget you’re not getting paid. Behave exactly as you would if you were a full time employee. Get to know as many people as you can while you are there, especially those higher up in the company, as making a good impression on senior staff-members will help your quest for fulltime employment.
You will probably be assessed thoroughly during your internship, but you should try to get as much informal feedback from your new bosses as well (provided you don’t make an annoyance of yourself!).
Remember - you can’t improve without knowing what it is you are doing wrong. There is no work relationship more important than the one you have with your manager. If you should succeed in impressing your seniors, you should get a job at the end of it.
To find your perfect internship may take time. Browse the web, trade publications, and magazines and newspapers. One of the best resources is the Graduate Jobs section of the Guardian website - try this for starters |
